In 2004 the Finchley Society joined forces with a group of his friends and family to raise funds for the creation of a bronze statue in Finchley. The aim is to perpetuate Spike's memory in a part of London where he was much loved.

The life-size statue by John Somerville will show Spike sitting on a park bench, turning as if to speak to an imaginary person sharing the bench with him. The bench will be bronze and will depict various aspects of Spike's life.

"One of the few members of my trade who deserves to have a public park named after him is Spike Milligan, the man responsible for such eternal verities as 'Anyone can be 52, but only a bus can be 52B' or 'Some people are always late, like the late King George.'  It is also to him that we owe the proposition that Tring was named after the inventor of the bicycle bell."
